What is DNS Security and Why should you care..

Not many of us know what a DNS is and how it works.

DNS, or the Domain Name System, translates human readable domain names (for example, www.amazon.com) to machine readable IP addresses (for example, 192.0.2.44).

Our ISP, the internet service provider relies on DNS to route our traffic to the right server. For ex: When we type www.google.com in the browser, a request is sent to the DNS Server which will then respond back with an IP address to which we are redirected to.

This means that the ISP is able to see what we browse and in turn this information is harvested and our Privacy is sold for a price.

Also since we do not know how reliable the DNS resolver is which is used by the ISP we are prone to all sorts of risks like Phishing attacks, Malware etc.

DNS Security is a subject which deals with the above problems and helps secure the DNS requests going out of our browser/system.

While there are multiple ways to secure the dns requests, the most popular one which gained a lot of traction is DOH, short form for Dns Over Https.

What is DNS Over Https?

DNS requests sent from your device are un encrypted and anyone in the middle can read and create a profile of yours or create a spoofing attack etc.

Even though the websites you visit are all secure, the dns requests are unencrypted so far.

With DNS over Https, the DNS requests are sent over secure https protocol so that no one can know which apps or websites you are visiting.

This is a very important step in the evolution of internet and helps users secure their privacy with ease.

As of today DNS over Https is supported by all Major Browsers and Operating systems.
